JOHN OJAKOVOH AND MAHESH KARU REPRESENT DEFENDANT IN ONE OF BRITAIN’S LARGEST PROPERTY FRAUDS

A man represented by John Ojakovoh and Mahesh Karu appeared at Southwark Crown Court last week for a two-day sentencing hearing in one of the UK’s largest property frauds. The defendant used multiple companies and identities to induce 45 investors to pay to buy properties that he was not entitled to sell. Among assets seized from the defendant and his companies by the police were a speedboat and 19 high-value cars, including Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and Bentleys. The defendant had previously pleaded guilty to 16 counts under the Fraud Act with a total value of £2.3 million, 14 counts of possession of false identity documents with improper intention, and perverting the course of justice. A further 45 offences of fraud, were taken into consideration, bringing the total fraud to almost £9 million. The sentencing judge accepted John Ojakovoh’s submissions that in the circumstances full credit should be given for the guilty pleas, and imposed sentences totalling 10 years for the frauds, identity document offences, and perverting the course of justice. Confiscation proceedings will follow.

John Ojakovoh and Mahesh Karu were instructed by Mark French of Montague Solicitors.
