DEATH BY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONVICTION AND SENTENCE

Jenny Burgess secures conviction of Defendant for Causing Death by Dangerous Driving. The defendant was convicted by a jury following a 9-day trial at Southwark Crown Court and sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment.

The victim was a family man in his 50s who was crossing the road outside Earls Court tube station in the early hours of 1st January 2021 when he was hit by a Zipcar driven by the defendant and which was travelling at almost twice the speed limit. The Zipcar had been dishonestly hired by the defendant using his co-defendant’s account and there was evidence that the defendant had been drinking before the collision.

The defendant failed to stop or seek assistance at the scene. He subsequently called his co-defendant admitting that he had “done a hit and run”.

The co-defendant had been previously sentenced to 1 year’ imprisonment after admitting perverting the course of justice after he had lied to the police and to Zipcar about the vehicle being stolen.

Jenny Burgess was instructed by Miranda Jollie of CPS Homicide.
