CUSTODIAL SENTENCES FOR CARE HOME RESIDENTS’ ABUSERS
Kate Blumgart and James Caldwell secure convictions of three defendants accused of ill-treating residents at a care home in Sutton. The defendants were convicted by a jury following a 4-week trial at Croydon Crown Court last year and sentenced today to a total of 5½ years’ imprisonment.
The defendants were employed as support workers at Grove House care home in Sutton which provided residential care for those with learning disabilities, mental illness and complex needs.
Two male residents suffered abuse at the hands of the defendants which included being sprayed with water, verbally insulted and humiliated, locked in a room, dragged by their hands and legs and roughly man-handled, denied food and having their clothing and possessions deliberately damaged.
These crimes have been described as “…as shocking example of a disability hate crime, involving abuse of very vulnerable people with complex needs”.
Kate and James were instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service (London South).
