MOTHER SENTENCED FOR KILLING BABY DURING COVID LOCKDOWN

Jane Osborne KC and William Goss have concluded the successful prosecution of a mother who killed her 4-month-old baby during the COVID lockdown. After an evening meal on Easter Sunday, whilst bathing her two children, Melissa Wilband violently shook her infant daughter. Injuries caused to her brain and eyes were of such severity they caused immediate collapse and, ultimately, death.

The trial at Bristol Crown Court before The Hon. Mr Justice Saini lasted 5 weeks, and concluded in April 2025. Melissa Wilband was convicted of Manslaughter and sentenced today to 15 years’ imprisonment.

Expert evidence highlighted chronic brain bleeding and atrophy, indicative of a separate shaking event some time before the fatal episode. The trial incorporated evidence from numerous experts in neurosurgery, neuropathology, radiology, histopathology, ophthalmology, and toxicology. Melissa Wilband wrongfully placed blame on her partner and co-accused, resulting in cutthroat defences.

Jane and William were instructed by Ann Hampshire of the Crown Prosecution Service Complex Casework Unit (Southwest).
