DRUNK DRIVER CONVICTED OF KILLING TWO
Sally Mertens secures the conviction of a woman for causing the deaths of two of her passengers and serious injury to another, by dangerous driving.
The defendant was driving her convertible Mini Cooper in the early hours of 16th July 2022 when she overtook another car at considerable speed and crashed, causing the two rear-seat passengers, who were not wearing seatbelts and were ‘twerking’ at the time, to be flung from the car and killed. Her boyfriend, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was also seriously injured. All of them had been drinking and the defendant was over the limit for alcohol.
Following a trial at the Old Bailey, a jury convicted the defendant unanimously on all counts and she will be sentenced on Friday.
Sally was instructed by the London Homicide Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service.
