JULIAN JONES - SUCCESS AT SOUTHWARK

Julian Jones's client, DAA, the principal defendant in a 5-handed trial, was acquitted of all charges at the Crown Court at Southwark, at the close of a 9-week trial in which Julian led Amelia Mckey, in-house counsel at Lloyds PR Solicitors

DAA had been charged with a modern slavery offence, conspiracy to control prostitution, and converting and transferring criminal property.

Julian drafted a letter of representations at the outset of the trial, in which he persuaded the Crown it was not in the public interest to pursue the modern slavery count and that the true gravamen of the alleged offending was properly covered by the other counts. The case featured a number of interesting legal arguments in which Julian also played a prominent role. The case featured upwards of 150,000 pages of evidence and was presented electronically.

Julian's closing speech systematically addressed the Crown's case on the crucial concept of "control" and presented a positive alternative narrative as to the modus operandi of the escort agency in question. He was ably assisted throughout by Amelia and his instructing solicitors Ieva Giedraityte and Manoj Rupasinghe of Lloyds PR Solicitors.
