CONVICTIONS & SENTENCES IN LARGE BRIBERY CASE

James Dawes KC and James Caldwell have prosecuted the largest ever bribery case investigated by Devon and Cornwall police.

The police uncovered a conspiracy which saw two senior employees of E.ON accepting significant bribes from construction companies to secure lucrative commercial contracts, particularly one to provide a district heating system to the developing suburban town of Cranbrook in East Devon. The wife of one of the E.ON employees was also involved in fraud and money-laundering.

These men, the wife and the construction companies’ co-conspirators pleaded guilty to various offences including fraud, bribery and money laundering and today at Winchester Crown Court received sentences of imprisonment (two of which were suspended). The bribes amounted to a total of £2 million over a period of approximately 4 years.

Counsel were instructed by Will Carr of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Specialist Fraud Division.
