A specialist jury advocate in serious cases, he has developed an expertise in extradition, judicial review of warrants, and certain aspects of media law including defamation. Available for Public Access work, and experienced in private prosecutions.
His recent jury advocacy includes murder, large scale drugs importation, people and contraband smuggling, firearms, rape, and serious sexual assault cases. Available for complex cases in the magistrates' court, including licensing, confiscation, trading standards and extradition. An experienced High Court advocate in quasi-criminal matters such as extradition and the judicial review of police action (from search warrants, through to unlawful arrest and detention), has appeared in public law challenges to prison governors and Transport for London. Also instructed in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) in complex cases on conviction, sentence, confiscation and Attorney-General's references.
In extradition, he has particular expertise in the law of online gaming and has been instructed by leading City law firms to advise on aspects of double criminality, specialty and the precise application of the Extradition Act 2003. His interest in defamation and media law began at Cambridge University and has been honed by study with the London School of Journalism. Has advised in cases of online defamation and aspects of recent phone-tapping allegations.
Born in Cardiff, he studied law at Downing College. Publications include The Blackstone's Guide to the Terrorism Act 2006, published by Oxford University Press. He has been published on covert surveillance in Terrorist cases. Recently returned from East Africa where he was asked by International Bridges to Justice to co-ordinate a criminal justice manual for Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Appointed by the Bar Standards Board to be the Assistant Chief Examiner for Criminal Law until 2016.
